Sphero Ollie Review: Ollie the Robot

What is Ollie the Robot?

Before we begin with the Ollie review, let’s talk about what Ollie actually is. Ollie is a portable app-enabled robot created by the company Sphero. Sphero has been on a roll in terms of creating intriguing robots. Some of these robots include the BB-8 and Sphero 2.0. Ollie is capable of doing many things like: driving, drifting, spinning, and doing crazy tricks.

We’ve spent countless hours playing (I mean uhhh… testing)with the Ollie to find its strengths and weaknesses in order to make a thorough Ollie review. So you’re probably wondering: is it worth buying? Let’s find out!

Launch Video

If you haven’t seen the Ollie in action, check out the video below:

- Fun for kids and adults
- Very fast, especially on hard floors
- Works on thick carpets
- Great battery life
- Can be customized
- Durable
- Re-calibration is required after doing tricks
- A bit of a learning curve

Ollie is shaped like a tube, which allows for faster driving speeds and for improved driving for both indoor and outdoor terrain. The shell is made from Polycarbonate, which is particularly useful when dealing with impact resistance. That means you can run into walls and other surfaces and not be concerned because Ollie is extremely durable.

A cool feature of Ollie is the LED glow. You have the ability to light your Ollie in different bright colors, which means you can play during the day and at night.

Ollie can be customized to your liking as well. Ollie gives you the ability to interchange the tires and hubcaps. They come in different colors. They have black, green, red, and pink tires. This is great because it allows for a more personalized look. Unfortunately the extra tires and hubcaps are not included, so you have to buy them separately.

A USB charger is included with the purchase of Ollie. Similar to a phone, you just insert the cable into Ollie and it will start charging immediately. Another similarity to a phone, more specifically the iPhone, is that the battery cannot be removed since it is built into the unit. Ollie uses a Lithium Polymer battery in order to function.

On a full charge, Ollie can last about one hour on full throttle. The less stress you put on Ollie, the longer it will last. It takes up to three hours  for Ollie to be completely charged.

Ollie uses a Bluetooth LE connection, which allows for a fast connection and helps conserve battery power. Ollie is pretty fast as well, as it can reach speeds of up to 14 mph. Not bad considering its size. It also has a control range of about 100 feet, which is more than enough distance to be able to enjoy it.

What was most impressive about Ollie was its ability to drive on thick carpets. Compared to the Sphero 1.0, carpets posed minimal issues to Ollie, making it more appealing to use indoors.

Something to keep in mind when using Ollie indoors is that Ollie has a tendency to get stuck along chairs and walls. You can counter this by either physically moving it or using the tricks mode to spin and flip away from the wall.

There is also a bit of a learning curve when first getting to know the controls for Ollie. I would say the optimal age range is 8 years and upwards.

Using the App

When you are ready to start driving Ollie, download and launch the app. You can find the app in the app store on both the iPhones and Androids. Just make sure you connect your Bluetooth Smart enabled device to your Ollie. When the app opens, there will me on-screen tutorials that you should follow in order to learn the basics of how to aim and drive your Ollie.

By swiping, tapping, or holding the gesture pad, you can make Ollie can perform over 100 different trick combinations.

How To Videos

Q: Is the Ollie Waterproof?

A: Unlike Sphero, Ollie is unfortunately not waterproof.

Q: Can more than one Ollie operate simultaneously?

A: A device can as of now control only one Ollie.  Up to 50 Ollies can run at the same time as long as they are on different devices.
